Learn about vacuum suction cups
Vacuum suction cups are a type of device commonly used in many automated systems. If you are interested in this device and want to learn more about them, then this article is for you.
Vacuum suction cups, also known as “giác hút chân không” in Vietnamese, are used in various industries for manufacturing purposes. They are specially designed to perform the basic function of holding objects in place by utilizing the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the suction cup.
Vacuum suction cups come in different types, shapes, sizes, and materials. They are designed to meet the requirements of securing and assisting in the movement of objects along the production line.
The suction cup is typically made of rubber or elastic plastic to ensure durability and elasticity of the device.
As a basic structured and functional device, vacuum suction cups are often designed as a component of other mechanisms or attached to robotic arms to assist in gripping, moving, and placing objects in specific positions. Depending on the type and size, vacuum suction cups can hold objects of various weights.
Basic structure of vacuum suction cups
Designed to be installed in mechanical structures and applied in various production lines, vacuum suction cups are provided in a diverse range, resulting in certain differences in their structure.
However, fundamentally, vacuum suction devices consist of two main components: the suction cup head and the connecting foot.
Connecting foot: The connecting foot, also known as the suction foot, is the part that is fixed to the mechanical structures. It is also connected to the vacuum hose system, while the other end is attached to the suction cup head. This component is designed to link with the system and withstand the forces exerted during the vacuum suction and lifting process. The connecting foot is often made of stainless steel to ensure durability and strength.
Suction cup head: This is the part that directly contacts and is designed to securely hold objects by utilizing the pressure difference between atmospheric pressure and the pressure after vacuum suction inside the suction cup. The materials commonly used to manufacture this component are flexible plastic or various types of rubber.
Operation of vacuum suction cups
Vacuum suction cups are primarily used to secure objects and facilitate lifting operations in the production process. To secure an object to the suction cup, a vacuum suction operation is performed to create a pressure difference between the inside of the suction cup and the atmospheric pressure outside.
The operation of vacuum suction cups is as follows:
First, the suction cup is lowered and brought into contact with the surface of the object. Thanks to the shape and elasticity of the suction cup head, it establishes contact with the object’s surface, creating a barrier between the interior of the suction cup and the external environment. Simultaneously, air inside the cup is expelled through the action of pressing down, resulting in a certain pressure difference.
However, this pressure difference alone is not sufficient to generate a stronger suction force than the weight of the object itself. Therefore, once the suction cup has secured its position with the object, the machinery system behind it initiates a vacuum suction process to draw air out from the inside of the cup. This creates a significantly larger pressure difference, leading to a firm attachment between the object’s surface and the suction cup head. This force is expressed by the formula:
F = A * ΔP.
Where:
- F – The suction force resulting from the pressure difference (N).
- A – The contact area between the suction cup head and the object’s surface (area of the suction cup) (m²).
- ΔP – The pressure difference, calculated by subtracting the “atmospheric pressure” from the “pressure inside the suction cup after vacuum suction” (N).
Types of Common Vacuum Suction Cups in Industry
In industry, vacuum suction cups are used in various systems, each with its own working conditions and specific properties. These differences are reflected in the suction force, operating speed, and characteristics of the objects involved.
Based on these differences, vacuum suction cups are designed according to specific working conditions in order to optimize their handling capabilities. As a result, there are many different types of vacuum suction cups.
The classification of vacuum suction cups is based on their structural shape, manufacturing materials, and load capacity. Some examples of vacuum suction cups include:
- Single suction cups
- Double suction cups
- Rubber suction cups
- Plastic suction cups
Applications of Vacuum Suction Cups
Based on their design and functionality, vacuum suction cups are designed to serve various production lines in different fields.
Application in Sheet Metal Processing Line
In factories involved in sheet metal forming, vacuum suction cups are used to fix and move metal sheets to appropriate positions corresponding to different processing stages. This significantly enhances work efficiency and reduces labor requirements.
Application in Product Packaging Stage
Product packaging is an important and time-consuming process, especially for certain specialized products that require high precision. Suction cup attachments are used to transfer finished products from the finishing area to the packaging area.
Using suction cup attachments speeds up the work process, improves work efficiency, and ensures consistency across all products.
Application in Glass Production Line
Glass manufacturing plants utilize a large number of vacuum suction cups to move glass panels of significant size and weight to different processing stages. The flat surface of the glass panels provides an ideal condition for the suction cups to securely grip and transport them to appropriate positions.
