Overview of pneumatic control cast iron globe valves

As you may know, cast iron is a widely used material in various fields due to its advantages such as relatively high hardness, light weight, and easy casting.

Because of these advantages, many valve manufacturers have incorporated this material into their production and have introduced various product lines, including pneumatic control cast iron ball valves.

Pneumatic control cast iron ball valves, which are a type of pneumatic control globe valves, have valve bodies made from different types of cast iron through casting methods. The operations of opening, closing, and regulating the flow of the fluid are performed through an air-driven actuator assembled with the valve body.

These valves range in size from medium to large and are typically designed for flange installation.

What material is the body of the pneumatic control cast iron ball valve made of?

From the product’s name, it is easy for anyone to guess that the body of the pneumatic control cast iron ball valve is made of cast iron. However, there is some additional information that you may not know, such as the specific type of cast iron used to manufacture the valve body.

Cast iron is an alloy of iron, with iron being the main component (around 96%) and carbon (around 2-4%). It also contains other additional elements such as manganese, silicon, chromium, etc.

The composition and proportion of these substances can vary to create different types of cast iron.

The body of the compressed air control valve is made from the following types of cast iron.

Gray Cast Iron

Compared to other types of cast iron, gray cast iron contains more graphite. It is the most commonly used material for industrial valve bodies.

The reason for this is that gray cast iron is relatively inexpensive, although it has a low pressure resistance of only about 13 bar and a working temperature range of 0 to 200℃. However, it meets most of the technical requirements of common systems today.

White Cast Iron

White cast iron has a relatively high silicon content compared to other types of cast iron. This material has high hardness but is also brittle. Therefore, white cast iron does not withstand impact and shock well. When compared to valves made of white cast iron, valves are easily destroyed when subjected to high-pressure water hammer. Due to its high hardness, valves made of white cast iron have good resistance to abrasion.

Ductile Cast Iron

Most types of cast iron are brittle, but ductile cast iron is a special case. Besides high hardness, this material is not excessively brittle and can be bent.

Valves made of ductile cast iron have the ability to withstand high pressure and good impact resistance.

Characteristics of pneumatic control cast iron globe valves

Industrial valves in general are manufactured with various valve types to optimize the performance of the equipment under different conditions. Each valve type has its own distinct characteristics that make it suitable for specific applications. The characteristics of the equipment are largely determined by their design, materials, and operational mechanisms.

The following are the characteristics of pneumatic control cast iron ball valves:

  • The body of the valve is made of cast iron, which makes the equipment cost-effective, durable, and versatile due to the wide range of cast iron materials available. This allows the valve to work in various conditions.
  • The valve body is constructed with two separate chambers that open and close by raising or lowering the valve disc, enabling the device to effectively regulate the flow rate.
  • The actuator uses compressed air and is installed with the product, enhancing the automation capability of the equipment. Additional functions can be achieved by using a positioning device in conjunction with the actuator.
  • The flange connection is designed based on standards such as JIS, ANSI, DIN, ensuring high sealing performance and pressure resistance at the valve and pipe joint as required by technical specifications.

Applications of pneumatic control cast iron globe valves

With their distinctive features in terms of design and functionality, coupled with the significant advantage of low investment costs, pneumatic control cast iron ball valves are widely applied in various fields, including:

  • In agriculture, although the use of this equipment is not very common, there are systems that utilize these valves to assist users in controlling and regulating the flow of water, serving purposes such as livestock farming or cultivation.
  • In the industrial sector, this valve product is more widely used because it can effectively work with liquids, gases, and hot steam at high temperatures. The presence of pneumatic control cast iron ball valves in factories is quite common.
  • On different types of ships, valves are commonly used, particularly for applications involving compressed air pipelines, hot steam pipelines, fuel supply pipelines, etc.
